"One of those like art-type girls", I swear Kanye West was talking about me when he said that. If I could spend every weekend exploring a new museum I would. This past weekend I had the privilege to attend California African American Museum with #GurlMuseumDay, and it was amazing!! Gurl Museum Day(GMD) was founded by award-wining visual multidisciplinary designer, Diane Lindquist. Diane get's women together to lead them through a list of electric museums and galleries around Los Angeles. Diane, a group of other dope creatives, and myself met at CAAM at noon and explored Derrick Adams: Network March exhibit and the LA Uprising of 1992 exhibit. Out of the two exhibits we saw, the LA Uprising of 1992 was definitely my favorite. The photographs of the LA riots so masterfully laid out in a timeline, definitely put me in my feelings. Even though I don't remember the riots, the conversations surrounding them and the familairity from repeated events that occur in our present day make me feel closer to them than I am.
Black Mamba
/Kill Bill is in my top 5 movies. Why, you ask... Well, because The Bride aka Beatrix Kiddo aka Black Mamba is a bad ass woman on a mission! Duh! Oh yea, besides the Black Mamba being a dope assassin-- she also wears this yellow, leather, motocross/motorcycle jumpsuit that I have always been obsessed with and every since Kill Bill was released in the early 2000's, I have been plotting on how I could transform into the Black Mamba. Luckily for me, trends are cyclical and in Fall of 2014 and Spring of 2016 a pro-sport trend began. I know you are thinking, "Leticia, but it's 2017." Please refer to my statement on fashion being cyclical and also refer to the fact IDGAF if a trend is 10 years old, I'll execute it when I am good and ready to. With that being said, I purchased some $20 motocross pants on eBay, threw on my Ego Nylon Booties, found a nice brim, and became my version of the Black Mamba. Check out the look below, let me know if I nailed it, and also check out some other pro-sport trends I may try this SS.
The Get Down
/So, at this point it is clear that I am influenced by almost any and everything when it comes to my style. I can be at an event and see something that catches my eye or I could be watching TV and be influenced. The TV scenario, is what happened last weekend. Like many, I binge watched The Get Down on Netflix and couldn't help but be motivated by the bright colors and disco influences. Just an FYI, my favorite style decades are the 70's and 90's, so no wonder The Get Down moved me. I quickly rummaged through my closet and found some bell bottoms, platforms, and a pendent laced turban to channel my inner Mylene. What really brought The Get Down vibes out weren't my clothes in this case, but my location. See below and let me know if I nailed The Get Down graffiti look.
Merging inspiration and Spring Trends
/If you know me, you know that I am not conventional when it comes to executing trends. I take current trends, mix it with my personal inspirations, and throw a splash of my personality in the outfits that I wear. I've been trying for weeks to execute the floral trend but I didn't want to do the typical floral dress. Like most people, Sade Adu is a constant inspiration and mood for me. While browsing my Instagram feed some time back, I came across a picture of Sade performing in a cheongsam dress, and I knew I found my look. If you don't know what cheongsam is, it is a Manderine and Cantaonese inspired body-hugging one-piece Chinese dress ( I make sure I do my research when I dip into other cultures for inspo). Well, this weekend I executed my floral look! I went to China town and purchased a cheongsam dress and paired it with some lavender knee high boots. Let me know your thoughts and if you will be trying out a floral trend this SS/17.
